Off the Map Inspired Bike Art - a study of negative space

This was a fun project! We started out decoupaging a map to art board
While that was drying, we chose a bike photo and isolated a section with a view finder.  Next we drew the contour of the outline of the bike on newsprint then transferred it to the mapboard with transfer paper

Then painted in the negative spaces with gesso.

Next each student chose a color of gouache along with white and black to mix tints and shades
After painting in the negative spaces, we chose a color to outline.

Jim Dine inspired mixed medium Heart Art

First we looked at and discussed Jim Dine's heart paintings, noticing colors in terms of temperature and value.  Noticing that mixed colors are much more interesting.
We started with a stencil and black acrylic paint
Next we covered it with gesso and drew in our hearts, marking off a grid for the background. We experimented with mixing watercolors in each square.

Next we colored some used oil pastels to color in the hearts, layering the colors to reveal changes in value making our hearts appear 3-D

Then we took our original stencil and scraffito'ed some of the pattern into our heart.

Then we outlined with black and blended it down letting the black be thicker on the shadowed side of the heart

Some of us used colored pencil with our stencil and then watercolored the heart using charcoal blended in for our darker value and out line

Winter Landscape Paint Party

Winter Landscape Paint Party!
We had such a great time at Helen's in December just before Christmas.  Her family was together for the holidays and wanted to paint a winter landscape.  We decided on a moonlit snowman scene that started with flip flopping blues into the sky and ended with spattering snow into the air.

Our youngest painter!  Beautiful!!

Everyone did a fantastic job and more importantly created warm memories of family, food and laughter.   It was such a blessing to spend time with all of you!
